Anti Reflective Coatings for Eyeglasses

Anti Reflective Coatings for Eyeglasses

AR Coating

Anti-Reflection is a type of coating which is applied on the optical lenses to reduce reflection. Anti-Reflective coating is also called AR coating or anti-glare coating. AR coatings are applied to optical surfaces to reduce hazards caused by reflections that travel backwards through the system and create ghost images. With the application of AR coating, your eyeglasses look cosmetically more attractive and it also improves your vision and reduces eye strain.

There used to be a common problem with the prescription glasses called back-glare. In which light hits the back surface of the lenses and bounces into the eyes. Anti-reflective coating is used to reduce the reflections off the lenses. Without the AR coatings you can actually see the reflections of your own eye in the lenses.

Why is Anti-Reflective Coating Important?

  • Anti-reflective coating allows more light to pass through your lenses to your eye, giving you sharper and clearer vision. The purpose of the AR coating is to reduce the amount of glare that reflects off your lenses.
  • Anti-reflective coating reduces the appearance of glare on your lenses, due to which people can see your eyes instead of lenses.
  • Anti-reflective coating reduces the eye fatigue, provides greater comfort during prolonged computer use. With the help of AR coating your vision would be so much clearer and sharper and you won’t need to strain your eyes and won’t be difficult to see.
  • Anti-reflective coating can also helpful in the low light conditions for example driving in the night time. When there’s no glare, more light passes through your lenses and improves your visual acuity with fewer distractions.

AR coating is especially useful for the high-index lenses. Because high-index lenses reflect more light than regular plastic lenses. Higher the index of refraction of the lenses, the more light will be reflected from the surface of the lenses. High index lenses can reflect 50% more light then regular plastic lenses, so that less light is available for your eye for vision.
